What Is NAD+ IV Therapy? A Beginner's Guide from Drip IV Wellness & MedSpa
Evidence-based patient education • Updated September 2026

You may have heard NAD+ mentioned in conversations about energy, healthy aging, cellular health, or wellness - but what exactly is it?
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a molecule naturally present in your cells. It plays an essential role in cellular energy metabolism and participates in processes involving DNA repair, cell signaling, and other aspects of cellular function. [Peer-reviewed review]
At Drip IV Wellness & MedSpa, NAD+ is one of our specialty IV therapy options. Unlike a traditional hydration drip designed primarily to replenish fluids and selected nutrients, NAD+ infusions deliver NAD+ intravenously over a longer period of time and are administered with clinical oversight.
If you're new to NAD+ therapy, here's what to know before scheduling your first infusion.
What NAD+ Is and How NAD+ Metabolism Changes With Age
NAD+ is involved in fundamental cellular processes. It acts as a coenzyme in reactions involved in energy metabolism and also serves as a substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair and cellular signaling. [NAD+ biology review]
This biology has made NAD+ an active area of aging research. However, the relationship between NAD+ and aging is more complex than saying that everyone's NAD+ levels simply fall at the same rate with age. Age-associated changes are well described in animal models, while human evidence is more limited and appears to vary by tissue and individual.
Researchers continue to study whether targeting NAD+ metabolism can meaningfully affect human health or aging. Importantly, current clinical evidence does not establish IV NAD+ as a treatment that reverses aging or treats age-related disease. [2025 Nature Metabolism review] [2026 systematic review]
What Happens During an NAD+ Infusion?
NAD+ therapy at Drip IV is different from stopping in for a quick hydration drip. After determining that NAD+ therapy is appropriate for you, an IV is placed and the NAD+ solution is administered gradually while you relax in one of our IV therapy rooms. Treatment is performed with clinical oversight, and the infusion can be adjusted based on your tolerance.
Drip IV currently offers 250 mg, 500 mg, and 1000 mg NAD+ infusion options. Because clinical research has not established a universally optimal dose or treatment schedule for general wellness purposes, treatment should be individualized based on your health history, goals, previous treatment experience, and tolerance.
NAD+ is generally administered slowly because some patients may experience temporary symptoms during infusion. Reported symptoms in a small 2026 real-world study included gastrointestinal discomfort, increased heart rate, and chest pressure during IV NAD+ administration; symptoms resolved after infusion completion. Because this was a small observational study, it should not be interpreted as definitive safety evidence. [2026 IV NAD+ tolerability study]
Depending on your goals and provider recommendations, NAD+ may be explored as an individual infusion or as part of a series. There is not yet an evidence-based universal series that is appropriate for everyone.
NAD+ Infusion vs. NAD+ Injection: What's the Difference?
Drip IV offers NAD+ in both IV infusion and intramuscular (IM) injection formats. An NAD+ IV infusion delivers NAD+ gradually through an IV catheter and allows a larger dose to be administered over a longer appointment. An NAD+ IM injection delivers a smaller amount into the muscle and takes much less time to administer.
Neither route should automatically be considered superior. Adequate comparative clinical-outcomes trials have not established that IV or IM NAD+ produces better wellness results. Dose, treatment goals, medical history, previous experience, tolerability, and provider recommendations can all factor into the decision.

Who Might Explore NAD+ - and Who Should Talk to a Provider First?
Interest in NAD+ therapy has grown among people exploring wellness strategies related to energy, cellular health, focus, recovery, and healthy aging. These are common reasons people seek NAD+ therapy, but research has not yet established that IV NAD+ reliably improves these outcomes.
A 2026 systematic review found no eligible clinical-outcomes trials of IV or IM NAD+ itself for anti-aging or wellness indications. Human studies of oral NAD+ precursors such as nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) demonstrate biochemical effects, but clinical benefits have been inconsistent. [2026 systematic review]
Because IV NAD+ is a medical treatment, your individual health history matters. We recommend provider review before treatment, particularly if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, undergoing cancer treatment, have significant cardiovascular, kidney, liver, or other chronic medical conditions, or take prescription medications that could affect treatment decisions. These circumstances should not be interpreted as a universal contraindication list; they are reasons for individualized clinical review.
Your consultation is also an opportunity to discuss what NAD+ can - and cannot - reasonably be expected to do based on current evidence.
NAD+ Infusion Options at Drip IV
Drip IV currently offers three NAD+ IV infusion strengths. Treatment times can vary based on tolerance and clinical judgment.
250 mg NAD+ Infusion: An introductory NAD+ infusion option administered gradually.
500 mg NAD+ Infusion: A higher-dose infusion administered gradually over a longer treatment period.
1000 mg NAD+ Infusion: Our highest-dose NAD+ infusion option and typically the longest treatment session.
Because evidence has not established an optimal IV NAD+ dose or schedule for wellness or anti-aging purposes, a higher dose should not be assumed to provide greater clinical benefit. Your provider can help determine an appropriate option based on your individual situation.
NAD+ IV Therapy FAQs
How long does an NAD+ infusion take?
NAD+ infusions are administered slowly, and appointment length depends on dose and individual tolerance. Drip IV's current scheduling estimates are approximately 2 hours for 250 mg, 4 hours for 500 mg, and 8 hours for 1000 mg, although actual infusion time may vary. [Source]
How many NAD+ sessions do I need?
There is not one evidence-based number of NAD+ IV sessions that is appropriate for everyone. Clinical research has not established an optimal IV NAD+ regimen for general wellness or anti-aging purposes. Your provider can discuss an individualized approach based on your goals, health history, response, and tolerance. [Source]
Does NAD+ IV therapy hurt?
IV placement may cause a brief pinch. During an NAD+ infusion, some people may experience temporary symptoms such as nausea or other gastrointestinal discomfort, increased heart rate, or chest pressure. Your clinical team can monitor you and adjust or stop the infusion when clinically appropriate. [Source]
Is NAD+ the same as a regular hydration IV?
No. Traditional hydration IVs generally contain fluids with selected vitamins, minerals, or other ingredients. NAD+ therapy specifically administers nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and generally requires a slower infusion.
Can NAD+ reverse aging?
No clinical evidence currently demonstrates that IV NAD+ reverses human aging. NAD+ plays an important role in cellular metabolism and aging biology, but clinical trials have not established IV NAD+ as an anti-aging treatment. [Source]
